We belive that everybody needs a unique style of coaching. We also understand that each person who walks in the door comes in for a different reason. It is our goal to help you achieve whatever you would like to get out of fencing.
Some people fence to relieve stress, many are recreational competitors, and a few work to be serious athletes in the sport of Fencing. No matter what you want to get out of Fencing, we can make it happen.
Our classes are designed to help you build the fitness you need to compete. Since Fencing is both a mental and physical discipline, we train both your body and your brain in every class, helping you become a strong competitor.
Head coach Sara Kass has been in the sport of fencing for over 20 years. She has competed extensively locally, regionally, and nationally, including two national women's Saber Medals. She studied and fenced at Hunter College in New York.
At Cyrano's Place, we teach Olympic Style Fencing. This sport is fast paced, exhilarating, and suprisingly accessable. There are three main diciplines in Fencing: Epee, Foil, and Saber. Fencing is also one of the safest olympic sports, boasting a very low injury rate.
Epee is fenced with the entire body as valid target and the rules are simple -- whoever hits first gets the touche! Foil, like Epee scores by hitting the opponent with the tip of the blade, but only the torso is valid target. Additionally, right-of-way (a set of rules used to determine who "controlled" the action) applies. A touche is awarded when a fencer hits valid target with right of way. Saber also uses right-of-way, but the entire upper body is target area. Touches are scored by hitting with the side of the blade.
Come by the club and try all three! You'll be suprised at how closely one of these diciplines matches your personality and competitive style!
Cyrano's Place is a fencing club in Lakewood, Ohio, just minutes from downtown Cleveland. We teach Olympic Style Fencing in all three weapons: Epee, Foil, and Saber. All skill levels are welcome, check out the Classes & Schedule page to for more info about class times.
We put the highest priority on saftey, respect, and sportsmanship. These three elements are essential to creating an environment where all of our members can learn, grow in the sport of Fencing, and of course, have fun! The Cyrano's Place team is a huge part of who we are as a club, and everyone who walks through the door is offered a chance to compete and become part of our close-knit community. We offer classes for children as young as five years old, though our coaches are experienced in teaching Fencing to every age.
